Hotel Industry Research: Beyond the Room
Beyond the Room is an ongoing research program from DestinationCommerce, powered by DropDesk. It combines third-party industry data with our own market modeling to size destination commerce: the opportunity for hotels to sell the spaces they own, the experiences they create and the local businesses they vouch for, through their own branded marketplace.
Headline findings
- $106: for every $100 U.S. hotel guests spend on lodging, they spend about $106 more off-property on dining, recreation, retail and other goods and services, before transportation.¹
- $786.5B: total U.S. hotel guest spending in 2024. Lodging was $235.5B of it.¹
- $27.3B: estimated annual U.S. destination commerce opportunity beyond rooms and ordinary food and beverage.²
- 22% → 75%: about 14,000 upper-tier U.S. hotels account for three-quarters of that opportunity.²
- $12.4B: the share of the opportunity that would be retained directly by hotels, with a further $10.6B flowing to independent local businesses.²
